Beginnings: a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Curriculum is an interactive presentation currently being offered to local schools.
Children born to women who use alcohol or illicit drugs during pregnancy are at a high risk for learning disabilities, behavioral problems and even mental retardation. In 2008, 32% of women screened in San Luis Obispo County were drinking alcohol in early pregnancy. The Beginnings curriculum was developed by a collaborative of local agencies and individuals to educate the community regarding the devastating effects of drugs and alcohol on fetal development. As a member of the Beginnings Collaborative, Alpha was able to present the Beginnings curriculum to 350 young people during the 2008-2009 school year. The Beginnings curriculum and collaborative are funded through a grant from United Way of San Luis Obispo County and First 5 San Luis Obispo County.
